How to Spot a Sustainable Corporate Gift (and how to make one that's truly yours)
It's the first week of January and the client gifts you sent in December have been opened, admired for a moment, and quietly moved to a drawer, or the bin.
That's the uncomfortable truth about a lot of corporate gifting, including gifts sold as 'eco friendly'. The label on the box says one thing, but what happens to the product afterwards says another.
If you're planning end of year gifts for clients, staff or partners, this guide will help you tell the difference between a gift that's genuinely sustainable and one that just looks the part. If you want something that carries your brand as well, we'll cover how custom gifting can do both.
What greenwashing looks like in promotional products
Greenwashing is when a product or business sounds more environmentally friendly than it actually proves to be. In promotional products, it tends to show up in a few familiar ways.
Vague claims with nothing behind them. Words like 'eco friendly', 'green', 'natural' and 'planet friendly' sound reassuring, but they don't mean anything specific. If a product can't tell you what makes it eco friendly, the claim probably isn't doing much work.
Sustainable packaging, unsustainable product. A gift arrives in a recycled cardboard box, but the item inside is single use plastic. The packaging is the green part, and it's carrying the whole story.
One small green feature, marketed as the whole product. A pen with a recycled plastic clip or tote with a small percentage of recycled fabric can be marketed as 'sustainable', even though most of the product isn't.
Green colours, leaf logos, brown paper, leaf icons and earthy fonts signal sustainability without proving it. Design is not a credential.
Regulators have also been paying closer attention to environmental claims, including in Australia, where the ACCC has been looking at misleading 'green' marketing. For businesses giving gifts under their own brand, thats one more reason to check what you're putting your name to.
The end of life test
Here's a simple way to cut through the marketing: picture the gift six months from now.
Where is it? If the answer is "in landfill," "in a drawer" or "in the recycling, if it's lucky," the gift hasn't really solved a sustainability problem. It's just a nicer looking version of the same one.
A genuinely sustainable gift has a good ending. It gets used up, composted, recycled, reused or turned into something else. The end of its life is part of the design, not an afterthought.
That's why so many sustainability minded businesses are moving away from "less bad" gifts and towards gifts with a clear, positive, regenerative end of life.
What genuinely sustainable can look like
Plantable products are one example of a gift designed with the ending in mind. Instead of being thrown away, a plantable notebook, pencil or gift set is planted, and it grows.
Take the BĪJ Notebook, which grows tomatoes, or the BĪJ Pencil, which can be planted to grow basil or mustard. The Back To Earth Gift Set goes further, combining a pairing of your choice. In each case, the recipient doesn't have to make a sustainable choice or work out how to dispose of the item. The gift does the work for them.
It also gives your brand a story people can see for themselves: a gift that turns into a plant on a windowsill, a desk or in a garden, long after the holiday season is over.

Can a custom gift still be sustainable?
Many businesses want gifts that look and feel like theirs: branded, personal and memorable. The risk is that customisation is where sustainability often slips. A logo printed on a plastic item, or a custom bundle in layers of non-recyclable packaging, can undo the good intentions behind the choice.
It doesn't have to work that way. Custom gifting done well starts with the same five questions, and applies them to every choice you make: the product, the branding, the packaging and the ending.
At Left-Handesign, our custom corporate gifting is built around that idea. From Name Tags to Business Cards, Thank You Cards or Gift Packs you are with us the whole process. The end result is a gift that carries your name and your values, and grows rather than throws.
It's also a story your recipients will remember, because a gift that grows keeps your brand on their desk or windowsill long after the holidays.

Why this matters for ESG and procurement
For procurement and sustainability teams, the benefit goes beyond the gift itself. Credible, verifiable products are easier to justify internally, easier to report on, and less likely to cause reputational risk if a claim is questioned.
Choosing gifts you can explain clearly, backed by evidence and with a defined end of life, supports your wider ESG goals and keeps your supplier choices consistent with what your organisation says publicly.
